Girls’ High School

When did the School open?

The school was opened as a private school on 8th May 1911 and in 1914 it was taken over by the Government.

Where was it located?

The school was first located in a house near to Victoria Park.

Has it moved to any other locations since then? 

It then moved to the corner of Tyrell and Lindlay Streets when the Boys' Grammar School moved from this location in 1914. This site is where the Public Health Department is now located. In 1935 it moved to its present location at McKies' Hill, which was known at the time as Judge’s Lodge.

Head Teachers - The First Headmistress

Miss Mary L. Ince was a Barbadian who started the original private school. She was kept on as Headmistress when the Government took over and served in that capacity from 1911 to 1918.

Miss M. B. Ince was the Assistant Mistress- she was sister to the Headmistress.

The first students on the school’s roll

In 1911 there were thirty-one students enrolled at the school. Mrs Louise Bacchus Prescott was one of the first students in 1911. In 1921 there were forty-three girls on roll. In 1926 there were 58 girls on roll. In 1936 the number on roll reached 80 of which about 8 were 5/6 year old boys and girls. When the number on roll reached 100- a few years later- there was a picnic at Young’s Island to celebrate.
