Kingstown Anglican Primary School

When did the School open?

The original Kingstown Anglican Primary School buildings were constructed in 1895. There are no definitive records of when the school was first opened but the earliest records of the school are from the 1920's.

Where was it located?

The school was located in the heart of Kingstown on land space 136 feet x 75 feet bordered by Higginson Street and Long Lane Lower. The lower part contained the Infant School with classes then referred to as Primer One and Primer Two while the upper floor housed the Primary School containing Juniors and Seniors then called Standards.  In 1923 due to the increase in pupil population, arrangements were made with the Manager to build a shed in the yard to ease the congestion.  In later years the shed was turned into an adjacent wing.

Has it moved to any other locations since then?

In 1999 in an effort to accommodate the continuing increase in the population of the school, the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines acquired the building that formerly housed the now defunct Glove Factory.  This building was located on the opposite side of the street, and was called the Kingstown Anglican School Annex and used to house the majority of Kindergarten and Lower Junior pupils.

Head Teachers - The First Head Master:

A Barbadian, Mr. Edwin ‘Shaggy’ King was the first Head Master of record- he served at the Kingstown Anglican School from the early 1920's to the mid 1930's.  He is credited with being the originator of the school’s motto, which was and still is an inspiration to the staff and pupils at all times.  It was also during Mr King's tenure that the Boy Scout Movement started on 17th September, 1923 with the enrollment  of  19 boys.

SCHOOL'S MOTTO: "Foster the inborn light"
