Treasure Our Schools

Currently (2017) in St Vincent and the Grenadines there are a total of 96 schools registered with the Ministry of Education: 69 Primary and 27 Secondary. Most of our schools are Government schools but there are some privately owned and run establishments and a few Government ‘assisted’ ones- these include some Church schools.

Many of the Government schools were once Church schools. They were set up and run by mainly the established churches and this was often reflected in the names of the schools: The Biabou Methodist School, The Kingstown Anglican School and the Bellevue (RC) Roman Catholic School.

There were/are also private schools which were/are set up and run primarily as businesses- fees had/have to be paid for students who attended/attend them. Many of these were also taken over by the Government. There are still private schools today but not many of the older ones are still operating.

NATIONAL TREASURES Schools’ Page:

This will focus on a few Primary and Secondary schools at a time, giving historical information as well highlighting significant milestones celebrated by any of the schools. Relevant photographs available will also be included. We will continue to add any information collected or which is made available to us to each ‘school’s page’. We have started with some of the older schools, that is those more than 50 years old.

N.B. Some of the schools to be documented are no longer in existence or have been renamed and/or amalgamated with another school.
